admin, Last Updated Sep 02, 2019

What is Tumblr?

Tumblr is a social networking website that acts as a micro-blogging tool. It was found by David Karp in the year 2007. It was first owned by Yahoo! Inc. from 2013 – 2017. Later it came under the ownership of Verizon Media, from 2017 to 2019. Recently, Automattic took over as the owner in 2019.

Why is Tumblr so popular?

As mentioned earlier, it is basically a micro-blogging website, which provides a platform to post contents as micro-blog articles. People can follow their favourite blogs. Users are also at a liberty to make their blogs private and available only to their followers, thus, having their privacy intact.

A recent statistic shows that Tumblr has over 475 million blogs and over 500 million monthly visitors.

Safe Mode in Tumblr

Tumblr rolled out the new feature called “Safe Mode” in 2017 that helps in filtering sensitive and mature content in the search results and dashboards. If activated, it means that the user would not see the sensitive materials on their dashboard and/or screens.

It is to be noted that the safe mode, by default, is activated in the phone app version. However, if someone wants to turn it off, then there is a very simple process to be followed.

Steps to Disable Safe Mode in Various Devices

Disabling Safe Mode in the Desktop app/Web Version

  • Start by logging into the account by providing the username and the password.
  • Click on the Account tab on the top and right corner of the screen.
  • Select Settings.
  • Start scrolling down until the Filter section comes into view.
  • A Toggle button would be visible. Turn the Safe Mode off from there.

Disabling Safe Mode on Phones and Tablets

iOS Devices

The upside to using iPhones and/or iPads is that the Safe Mode can be directed turned off from the devices.

  • Open Settings.
  • Select the Tumblr app.
  • Tap on Safe Mode.
  • Click on the “Don’t Hide Anything” tab.
  • Return to Save Settings.

Android Devices

  • Open Tumblr app.
  • Tap on Account tab.
  • Click on Settings.
  • Select General Settings.
  • Select the Filter option.
  • Switch off the Safe Mode option present there.

Bypassing Safe Mode without Signing in to the Account

Third party apps like GramUnion, Tumbex and TumblViewr help the user to view any sensitive and/or restrictive content posted on Tumblr without even logging into the website.

NB: Disabling or bypassing Safe Mode on Tumblr is pretty simple and quick nowadays. However, it is to be duly noted that if the user is under 18 years old, Tumblr prohibits him/her any access sensitive contents on the website. This is, no doubt, the right action. So, consider your age before making the decision.
